These are silage sunflowers, that is, flowers grown for the local cow herds in Spring City as part of their winter feed. The big pickle crock and other items were borrowed for the annual plein air painting competition in Spring city and this painting won 3rd place in the 2018 competition.
I had a friend in Ephriam Utah who owns a fine collection of antique items. Her home is not far from Spring City and in 2018 I spent 3 days painting some of her things as part of the big annual competition there. Collecting the sunflowers however was another story and that took place a few miles away where a local farmer was growing a half acre of silage sunflowers. it turns out the oils and plant materials are good winter food for his cows. The 30'x40' canvas itself was a joy to paint and a large size for plein air. The competition is attended by over 100 artists from all over the stage and I was thrilled to have this painting win the 3rd place award that year.
